Stephen John Langton (1150 – 1228) – The Magna Carta Saint

Stephen John Langton was an English Cardinal and Archbishop of Canterbury from 1207 to
1228, a key figure in the conflict between King John and Pope Innocent III, and a major force
behind the drafting of the Magna Carta in 1215. The charter curbed King John's power and
protect the English Church 's rights, embodying ideals of limited government and freedom from
illegal imprisonment. Langton mediated between the king and rebellious barons, incorporating
the Charter of Liberties and Old Testament principles of justice into the document, limiting
royal authority and establishing the rule of law ensuring fair treatment and justice for the
people. He is also widely credited with dividing the Bible into the standard chapters used today,
a development that made the text more accessible for study and citation. Langton also
promoted the schola chant tradition and composed the famous hymn Veni Sancte
Spiritus. Learn more here…

Servant of God

A formal request for canonization is made to consider a deceased person for sainthood. If the bishop believes there is enough evidence, he asks the Vatican for permission to open a tribunal and call witnesses. If the candidate passes, he or she is named a “Servant of God

Venerable

The bishop sends a formal report to Rome where it is reviewed by the Congregation for the Causes of the Saints. Once a candidate has been determined to be virtuous and heroic in his or her faith, he or she is declared “Venerable.

Blessed

A candidate may be beatified and named “Blessed” if he or she was a martyr or a verified miracle was brought about through a person’s intercession of the candidate. At this point, he or she can be venerated in his or her city, diocese, region, or religious community.

Saint

If a second miracle is verified, the Prefect of the Congregation may send a cause for canonization to the pope who makes the final decision to officially declare the person a “Saint.

CANONIZATION CAMPAIGNS START HERE

The spiritual journey is not about being seen, but about being faithful. The forgotten saints remind us that even the smallest ‘yes’ to God carries an eternal weight  a whisper that becomes an echo across generations.

In every age, countless faithful souls have lived in humility, serving God and neighbor with quiet devotion. History may have overlooked their names, but their witness remains alive, calling us to courage, sacrifice, and love in our own time.

At VENERABILIS, we seek to uncover these hidden lives and restore their voices, so that their example may inspire today’s believers and tomorrow’s seekers. Their unseen sacrifices remind us that faith is not measured in recognition but in fidelity  and that the smallest ‘yes’ to God has the power to transform the world.

We invite you to join this mission: to remember what history has forgotten, to venerate those who lived in humility, and to imitate their devotion in our daily lives. Together, we can ensure that their light, once hidden, will shine again guiding us toward a deeper, richer, and more faithful Catholic witness
We invite you to walk with us  to join in prayer, to lend your voice, to be part of a movement that honors the forgotten, uplifts the humble, and revives reverence in our time. Whether through supporting our campaigns, reading our spiritual resources, or simply sharing our vision, you can help ensure that the venerabili are remembered, honored, and imitated.

Together, we can proclaim what the forgotten saints have always known: that holiness is possible, that humility is powerful, and that every “yes” to God   however small   echoes forever
